PAST MEETINGS

December 5, 2016 - Hammondsport Mac Users Group

ATTENDING : Tom B, Nancy D, Russ C, John M and Al J.

TOPIC : OPEN / SHARE

Even though the group was small at this meeting, the discussions were great.

John mentioned a new app he bought called Picture Keeper ($29) to help him keep track of the many photos scattered thoughout his Mac devices.

Al related his experience of running Quicken (PC only) on a Mac by using either Bootcamp (free from Apple)) or Parallels ($79 new/$49 upgrade) to run any version of Windows OS on an Intel Mac.

Nancy said she has successfully used Quicken for Mac ($45) on her Macbook Pro.

We looked at some of the great short video tutorials found at MacMost.

Tom took notes at our meeting by writing directly to his 2010 MacBook Pro via an old Wacom tablet and wireless pen.

We also got into a discussion of left and right handedness and how many of society's tools and devices are designed for right handers. (Yogi Berra once said he would give his right arm to be ambidextrous).

This was followed by a discussion of why our society has dropped the teaching of cursive writing to young children in elementary school.

Another topic that came up was the latest MacBook Pro 'improvements' that seem to give us solutions searching for a problem. (i.e. the new 'touch bar') - read more at Tidbits.

We also talked about all the spam email, scam phone calls, and hoax news bombarding us on a daily basis. Tom shared an interesting 10 minute video about 'astroturfing' - fake media narratives, phony blogs, Wikipedia editing and Google manipulation - presentation by veteran investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson at a recent TED talk.
